Leopard kills 2 boys in Valley

SRINAGAR, Feb 5: Two boys were mauled to death in separate attacks by leopards in Anantnag and Baramulla districts today.

Toaib Khan, a 14-year-old boy, was killed by a leopard at Check-e-Hassanabad in Mattan area of Anantnag district this afternoon.

The sources said the boy was playing in the field when he was attacked by the leopard which was later chased by villagers back into the forest.

Eight-year-old, Saba Manzoor, was attacked and killed by a leopard at Chandoora in Baramulla district yesterday, the sources said adding the boy was walking with his father when he was taken away by the wild animal.

A search operation launched by villagers later led to the recovery of some portion of the body of the boy from the nearby forest, the sources said.

With the two deaths, the number of persons killed by wild animals in Kashmir valley over the past month has gone up to six. Four minors were killed by leopards in Anantnag district in December and January leading to massive protests. Several teams comprising police and Army alongwith wild life officials have been deployed in the area to trap the animal which has let loose a reign of terror in the villages close to the forest belt.

The frequent attacks by wild animals in the villages was attributed to scarcity of food in the forests and interference by humans in their habitat.(PTI)
